About the club

Clubul Montan Transilvania started from a simple idea: anyone who loves the mountains should be able to go hiking without paying for it. The club was founded on 9 June 2022, and since then our hikes have been free. Volunteers organise them, and each participant only pays their share of the fuel.

We wanted everything done properly. That is why the club is an officially registered association, with a statute, a board and an auditor and all the paperwork in order, and we publish the money we receive and spend on the Transparency page.

Join 10 hikes with the club. We keep track of the hikes you take part in.

How much does a hike cost?

Hikes are free. You only pay your share of the fuel if you travel in another participant’s car (the estimated cost is shown in each event, usually between 10 and 50 lei) and, if you like, the meal at the end. After the hike you can make a donation, but it is not compulsory and has no effect on joining future hikes.

Can I support the club without paying anything?

Yes. If you earn a salary in Romania, you can redirect up to 3.5% of your income tax to the club, between 1 January and 25 May, by filling in form 230 online on redirectioneaza.ro. Details on the Support the club page.

EXPLORE

EXPLORE is the club’s application to the #BeActive EU Sport Awards, the European Commission’s awards for sport and physical activity, funded through Erasmus+, in the Volunteering category. It presents our model: free one-day hikes run by volunteers, where today’s participants become tomorrow’s organisers.

The European hiking federation

Since 5 October 2024, Clubul Montan Transilvania has been a full member of the European Hiking Federation (ERA), the European federation of hiking organisations, known until 2025 as the European Ramblers’ Association. Through the federation we are connected with hiking clubs and associations across Europe, and club members can take part in its yearly conference.

Clubul Montan Transilvania is a non-profit association. All the work behind the hikes is done by volunteers, and the money we receive goes into equipment to lend (crampons, trekking poles, radios), promoting the hikes, the membership fee of the European hiking federation and accounting. You can see, year by year, where the money comes from and what we spend it on, on the Transparency page.

Redirect 3.5% of your income tax

If you earn a salary in Romania, you can direct up to 3.5% of the income tax you have already paid to the club. It costs you nothing: the money does not come from your pocket but from tax that would otherwise stay with the state.

1. Participation

1.1. In general, the activities carried out by the Club are open to everyone, regardless of age. The Club will mention in the description of the activity if there are any restrictions in this regard.

1.2. People who take part in the Club’s activities must be physically fit and have no health problems.

1.3. Registration for the Club’s activities is done only by filling in the registration form for that activity.

Your first hike

Clubul Montan Transilvania’s hikes are free and open to everyone. We usually hike on Saturdays, in the Apuseni Mountains and around Cluj. All the work behind them is done by volunteers.

1. Pick a hike

Hikes are first posted as events on the club’s Facebook page and on the Events page. Each event gives, in Romanian and English, the route, meeting point, distance, elevation gain, duration, difficulty and mandatory equipment.

If it is your first hike, choose an easy or medium-easy one and look at the distance and elevation gain. Better a hike that is too short than one that is too long.
